If you have been here for a while, you know Memoria Press is my primary curriculum provider for the materials we use in our Memoria Scholé Academy from the Preschool ages and beyond. Currently, I’m planning for an upcoming Fifth Grade Classical Core, Simply Classical Level 4 Fourth Grader, a combination Junior Kindergarten moving to Kindergarten, and Preschool (age 2-3) student. Yet, in addition to all that, I am also working on my own Classical Education rejuvenating with the higher level materials. During this review period, I am working through The Wars of the Jews set including Study Guide, Teacher Guide, and the Memoria Press published The Fall of Jerusalem by Josephus. I have been blessed with another book to add on to a future Ninth Grade equivalent school year.

As far as I have seen, it is not currently assigned within the Classical Core Curriculum, yet it is my understanding that the students at Highlands Latin School visit the topic at the same time as, or soon after, studying The Book of Acts and the Inter-testamental period. In addition, a fellow Memoria Press enthusiast mama has used this in conjunction with her Ninth Grader paired with The Book of Acts to make a full Christian Studies year. She tells me that The War of Jews worked well in ten weeks plus one more review lesson with “deep content, but light course work” making an excellent combination. At this time, there are not currently lesson plans for The War of the Jews set, however, in Memoria Press style I see those as forthcoming, but it is fairly straight forward if you plan to work a lesson per week stretching it for nearly a semester or summer term for further enrichment.

The idea of studying The Wars of the Jews with reading The AeneidThe Book of the Ancient Romans and I have to confess that studying this alongside the possibility of reading Beowulf, The Story of ChristianityThe Book of the Middle AgesCanterbury Tales, Henry V, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight; as well as studying Poetry, Prose & Drama, and Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics sounds like an immersible dream to me! Coming into reading this advanced study of Josephus was especially powerful for me after having spent many hours in the past year listening and relistening to a G.A. Henty’s Adventure For the Temple in which a story unfolds during the time of the Roman occupation and Josephus. A fun way for us to include the entire family in our furthering Christian Studies and Classical History. It is especially fun and timeless for me as I prepare to introduce my daughter to studies of the Famous Men of Rome in the school year to come.

In The War of the Jews set, I received a matte finish Teacher Guide by Sean Brooks, a glossy finish Student Guide, and a buttery soft novel size The War of the Jews reader (141 pages) by Josephus with translation by William Whiston containing Book V and VI and endnotes of the book therein with sparse black and white images spread throughout. The Teacher Guide (35 pages) contains all of the questions and guidance from the Student Guide (26 pages) with answers filled in for ten lessons, plus a review lesson (1-10) and a copyable single unit test and key. The Student Guide includes a Memoria Press style guidance with for ten lessons and a review lesson with features such as Facts to Know, Vocabulary, Discussion Quotes, and Comprehension Questions for each lesson. Not every lesson has a vocabulary segment. There is not a test in the Student Guide, you must get this from the back of the Teacher Guide. Through these books, a student of Christian Studies can go further into learning the prophecy of Christ and the Fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD through the accounting of Josephus, a Jewish man turned Roman citizen. The set did not come with any digital files.

When it first comes to studying Josephus in Christian Studies, I was confused as I kept thinking back to the concept of Biblical Studies over Christian Studies as this is in the history of what comes later after the primary Christian Biblical texts. The War of the Jews is not a study into Josephus, although the first lesson does cover the basics of who he was and how his words have carried authority throughout the ages of the historical record.
